Metacentric Height (Ship Stability)
Also known as: GM · Metacentre Formula · Bouguer Stability Criterion
When a ship heels, the underwater shape shifts the buoyancy force sideways to act through a point called the metacentre. If that point sits above the centre of gravity, buoyancy twists the ship back upright; if below, it capsizes.
A boat cross-section rocks on water; lines mark the centre of gravity, centre of buoyancy and metacentre, and the hull rights itself or capsizes depending on whether the slider-set GM is positive.

In his 'Traité du navire' Bouguer introduced the metacentre to put ship stability on a rigorous footing, replacing shipwrights' rules of thumb. Euler developed parallel results; GM remains the single most quoted number in naval-architecture stability books.

- A wider beam is always safer — wider raises BM (good) but can pair with a high G; both matter
- GM measures how far it can roll — it sets the stiffness/righting rate, not the ultimate range of stability (that is the GZ curve)
- A very large GM is ideal — too large gives a brutally stiff, fast roll that is uncomfortable and can shift cargo
