Wind speeds up with height, so it blows faster over the taller mound. Faster air means lower pressure there (Bernoulli), and the pressure gap between the two openings continuously sucks fresh air through the tunnel — a passive pump.
Wind blows faster over a tall mound than a short one; the resulting Bernoulli pressure difference pushes a stream of air through the U-shaped burrow, with speed set by the wind sliders.

Biologist Steven Vogel and colleagues showed that prairie-dog and other animal burrows exploit the wind-speed gradient: by shaping one entrance mound taller than the other, the animals harness Bernoulli pressure differences to ventilate metres of tunnel without any muscular effort.
Prairie dogs never dig a fan, yet their tunnels breathe — wind does the pumping for free.
A burrow has two entrances: a tall mound where wind blows at 3 m/s and a low mound where it blows at 1 m/s (air ρ = 1.2 kg/m³). Estimate the Bernoulli pressure difference that drives air through the tunnel.
